  1. What is an Ultra Light Ground Vehicle?

    Ultra Light Ground Vehicles (ULGVs) are defined as human powered vehicles which may or may not be powered with additional sources to supplement. Fundamentally ULV are based on a form which is designed to be human powered.

  2. How are ULGVs different From Bicycles?

    ULGVs are generally based on bicycles, and include pedicabs, trikes, and virtually any type of human-powered wheeled vehicle.

  3. How are ULGVs different From Electric Bicycles?

    Electric Bicycles are included in the ULGV form factor.

  4. What legal classification standard currently apply to ULGVs?

    The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 500 (DOT FMVSS500) is the prevailing standard for ULGVs.

  5. Where can ULGVs be operated?

    The locations where ULGVs may be operated depend on local regulations.

    Sidewalks - Generally, they may not be operated anywhere where bicycles ( and sometimes, skate boards) may not be operated.

    Bike Paths – some small and single passenger ULV’s may be operated on dedicated bike paths, but in general, full size ULV’s will not be permitted on bike paths.

    Street and road operations – Generally, anywhere that the FMVSS500 standard permits Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) to be operated will permit ULV operation. This will always rule out highway operation, generally rules out roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or above, but permits unimpeded use in most urban and suburban areas, where the speed limit is at or under 35 mph.

  6. What is the top speed of a ULV?

    A ULV may be pedaled to the legal limit. Under power, the ULV is governed by the DOT standard and may not exceed 25 mph.

  7. What is the range of a ULGV?

    Unlimited, but the typical utility use of ULGVs are for commuting to work, trips to the store or school, generally any trip under 5 miles. That will include more than 70% of all vehicle trips in the United States.

  8. Do I need a license to operate a ULGV?

    A human powered ULGV, without any powered assistance, can be operated without a license, under the rules that apply to bicycles.
